Open RAN Standardization Developments: What’s Done and What’s in Progress

18 May 2023 | IN-6950

The O-RAN Alliance aimed at extending the Radio Access Network (RAN) standards from well-known Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) to add openness, intelligence, and interoperability to RAN architecture. Open interfaces are being defined and developed by the O-RAN Alliance consortium. At this stage, the O-RAN Alliance is not an SDO; therefore, any standard-related progress will certainly need standardization or require liaising with well-known SDOs, such as The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), ETSI, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), or remain open. Recently, the O-RAN Alliance has started to collaborate with SDOs to adapt its specifications.
