Android OS Dominates 53% Market Share for Smart Device Operating Systems for the Year 2014
In this first edition market data, smartphones and tablets help boost Android’s reign over all smart device operating systems (OS) for the year 2014. This report analyzes notebook PCs, smart cars, smart glasses, smart watches, smartphones, tablets, and Ultrabooks from an OS perspective. Although Android’s reign is strong, that dominance may have reached its peak as OS competition increases. Market intelligence firm ABI Research forecasts Android to experience a modest CAGR of 10% between 2014 and 2019 as leading OEMs realize the profits produced by Android vendors is finite and seek new OSs for differentiation.
Since inception, the smart device market has been rapidly increasing as devices, especially smartphones, become ubiquitous. “In the past few years, we’ve seen significant growth in OS market competition and new platforms for computing enter the market,” says Research Analyst Stephanie Van Vactor. “Users now have the option to experience different device management resources, access to the latest apps, and select a style that suits their needs.”
The option for users to make a choice is allowing newer operating systems, such as Chrome and Firefox, an opportunity to attract and retain customers. ABI Research forecasts Firefox to experience a CAGR of 29% and Chrome a CAGR of 26% between 2014 and 2019. These two platforms are expected to gain major ground over the next 5 years. Although Google is technically creating competition with itself between Chrome and Android, the two platforms work together cohesively and provide users with a new web-centric computing style. “Smart devices are the new ‘it’ factor and users are anxiously adapting to these changes. The key to an OS’s success is engagement, experience, and security,” continues Van Vactor. Users want to maximize their experience without risking privacy and security. As competition increases so will the power for a user to capitalize on their ability to make a selection or even change platforms.
